Reopening of international flight operations

Spirit Airlines plane arrives to Guayaquil

03/06/2020 - With a water salute, the first commercial international flight was welcomed to the Airport of Guayaquil, José Joaquín de Olmedo, two and a half months after all flights were suspended due to the COVID-19 health emergency.

Upon disembarking, 128 passengers flying from Fort Lauderdale (US) on Spirit Airlines, went through strict biosecurity controls. The Ministry of Public Health performed rapid COVID-19 tests.

"For the Airport of Guayaquil this flight is important, for it means opening the skies of Latin America and Ecuador to commercial flights, and we're very optimistic about it" said Ángel Córdova, General Manager of TAGSA, company in charge of the JJO Airport.

After disembarking and once the sanitizing process was finished, the plane took off with 73 passengers towards Fort Lauderdale (US) making it the first commercial international commercial flight in the country.
